hands-on PTR-MS 2017 for IMPACT ESR students
A week of training and experts’ lectures at “the home of PTR-MS”
Our team prepared intensively for a week of training that we proudly hosted at IONICON a couple of days ago. We conceived lectures and workshops, prepared documentation and polished up our PTR-TOFMS instruments for Early-Stage-Researchers (ESRs) from the Horizon 2020 ITN project “IMPACT”. The ESRs were visiting us for an intensive training on PTR-MS, since it is one of the leading SCIMS (soft chemical-ionisation mass-spectrometry) technologies and we are the market leader in this field.
The students came to us from all over the world and we committed ourselves to provide background education on theoretical concepts of mass spectrometry, chemical ionization and especially, Proton Transfer Reaction combined with time-of-flight mass spectrometers.
Afterwards the participants could get their “hands on” our instruments in small groups. IONICON experts facilitated workshops on using PTR-TOFMS for measurements, optimizing the set-up, routine maintenance, calibration and selective reagent ions that are available with our SRI technology.
On the final day each and every ESR student had to give a talk on their research project and progress at their host institutions.
The session at IONICON concluded with lectures from internationally renowned experts in the fields of PTR-MS in atmospheric chemistry and pioneering ion molecule reaction studies with the ancestors of PTR-MS. We were honored that Prof. Thomas Karl from the University of Innsbruck and Prof. Patrik Spanel from the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry followed the invitation and held respective talks.
We would like to thank all speakers and the ESR students for a memorable week and their great contributions to this training event.
